Way back in the olden days, my folks bought me a cheap plastic trumpet. One of the few songs that I learned from that book of "notes" for songs was "Taps." One of the WWII guys that was with the American Legion heard me playing that one day. He came by the house and visited with my folks and me and asked if I could play "Taps" at their Memorial Day military ceremony. So there I was, in my scout uniform, playing "Taps" at the graveside ceremonies next to a WWI soldier from our community. I think that is when I really became interested in learning more of our country and what our veterans did for us. Our small town had a bunch of WWII vets, one of which was our "blacksmith." One day, while waiting for him to weld a part for one of our farm implements, I noticed his wooden leg and kind of stared at it. He took a break from his work and sat down to explain to me that there are occasions when one has to be prepared to defend freedom, even if it isn't our own freedom at risk, and to be prepared to make sacrifices for that freedom. His leg was part of his sacrifice.
