Russian capture (RC) K98's have never had much value in my eyes other than a shooter. IIRC the Russians rebuilt everything they picked up off the battlefield. None of the numbers match on any RC's I have seen for sale. When the Russians put them back together after refurb, they were not concerned about future collector value. These are still geniune K98's that are fun shooters without spending a lot of money. Tennessee Guns imported a lot of them and I know they would check headspace on mismatched bolts before they put them up for sale. Lots of them have the waffenamts pinged out if it was a swastika. Many of the stockedpiled K98's were given away years later by the Russians to any army of liberation that was of a socialist flavor.

They were given. Soviets supported the Israeli takeover in the beginning. Chambered in 8x57 as built. The 7.62x51 re-chambering came much later.

Stay away from Mitchells. Scrubbed and restamped fakes. One used to be able to find some good examples at gun shows but all that has changed. I haven't even seen very many rc mausers at gunshows last couple years. Empire Arms is a good place to find authentic K98 mausers.

Best advice here if you want a collectible Mauser. I bought a retired Mosin-Nagant sniper from Dennis several years ago--restored it to sniper config. It was a tack driver.

Get on his mailing list, but be sure to have your FFL to send him the necessary papers before you decide to buy something or you'll miss the first good deal you want to buy.
