Back when I was stationed at Ft Monmouth NJ, they opened up some sealed warehouses and sold the contents unseen and unboxed to the highest bidder. Military active duty had priority.
It was tough times for me as I only made $80 or so a month with the wife and newborn getting $120 a month, but we survived.
I was selling Plasma a couple times a week to make money and got a little stash. Buddy and I bought two crates at the auction for $100.
Each contained a Harley 45 in cosmoline similar to the pic above. The tires were rotten. Surface rust everywhere. Some guy walked up and offered us $200 apiece for them. An offer too good to refuse considering that was over two months salary for me.
So, they were sold. The extra money was much appreciated and needed.
Looking back, I gave away some serious money, but at the time it was just what we needed to get by another few months.
