I had a 12 inch barrel contender pistol in 45-70 for a short while and it was not fun, American Derringer makes a derringer in 45-70, can't imagine shooting that. The hardest kicking rifle I've had was a converted 98 Mauser in .458 Win mag. had a Ram Line synthetic stock and a medium taper barrel probably only weighed 8 lbs. Fist time I shot it, it had a 3x9 scope and it hit me between the eyes and nose and swelled my nose and blacked my eye. Didn't cut me thankfully but after that the scope came off for good. I got rid off it and bought my Ruger 77 which probably weighs at least 10 lbs with a much better stock and a Limbsaver pad, its not bad at all.

I think it was Craig Boddington that had either a 4 bore or 8 bore double on him when he shot it and the lever that opens the barrels almost cut his thumb off

I had a chance to shoot that 8 bore but I declined after seeing how it pounded him, and he was quite a bit heavier that I was! Now, I kick myself almost daily for not shooting it.

Just how bad is it?

Obviosuly, I haven't been looking for one but, if you wanted a shootable rifle in 4 or 8 bore, I bet they would start in the six figure range. I don't remember just what they sold that one for, but I'm thinking it was around $40K. Like I said, that was in 1984!

My knuckle was a bit red yesterday.
I guess my middle finger has a bit of a bruise today.

Last time I was at Champlin's they were still custom loading 4 and 8 bore ammo, I don't remember them still having a rifle though, just a 600 Nitro lol.
