Yes, that's why the story followed Shane's story line to a T even using the same actions as in the comic to show him as a secret bastard who was deserving of what was coming to him, but then just suddenly peeled away after the internets were alight with rah-rah Shane talk. After the first season, where he was shown as a suave Billy Badass and not just a conniving adulterous murdering selfish piece of ****, They then spent an ENTIRE WHOLE SEASON showing his descent into madness and how he was such a bad leader for the group that even though most people wanted to support him in the end they understood that he was a threat to the group and had to be eliminated. And they did all of that...just 'cause. Not to mention that that scene HAD to be in the story somewhere as it was the shaping point of of Rick and Carl's relationship and each individual character's world view and set the tone for their actions in similar situations that arose. The simple fact is, no one thought that a powermad Alpha male adulterer would have made such a sympathetic character to so many people. All that stuff between him and Carl in the first season? Made people like him. It was meant to show how people are the real enemy and even those you thought were close to you in 'normal' times would turn, but it backfired, and instead they had a sympathetic character who just happened to beat the hell out of people on a whim. Then, they couldn't just turn around and make him all crazy all of a sudden, 'cause at that point it wouldn't be believable so instead they had to show him descending totally into madness. The entire second season was setting up his character's death, from first to last, after they had already set it up in the first few episodes but went nowhere with it. Now why would they set it up, exactly as in the comic, and then spend a whole other season after they have clearly established a motive and a will, to tear him down and make him less likable? So, I'm pretty sure that was the case.
