If you do not already have some in the ground, it is a good time to plant walking onions. Also called Tree onions or Egyptian onions.

For those that do not know about them, they are good but will take over if you let them. Plant away from your main garden in someplace they can just run wild without being a problem.

I had a huge patch of bunching onions. Danged gophers like them too. Ate all the roots, leaving the "cap" with nothing to get a drink from and they died. You can take a knife, stick it into the ground around one of the patches, get a root section, and give them to a friend. They last all winter. Just like "green onions", but a little bigger.
