Actually it can be used, but needs some U235 to start the reaction and create much more energy. There are some reactor deigns that use U238. Interestingly enough most Navy reactors use highly enriched uranium. Thorium is not fissionable and there are reactor designs that could utilize it as fuel. Even better, The Uranium Company that was sold to russia have been bought back by an American Company. Thank you for posting! BTW, that is an awesome cloud chamber. In grade school made one with a pickle jar and dry ice. Also tried it again a few years back. I did get results, just not as spectacular as that!
