Pump jacks dot the landscape outside Midland, a West Texas oil town.

The U.S. Geological Survey says it has found the largest continuous oil and gas deposit ever discovered in the United States.

On Tuesday, the USGS announced that a swath of West Texas known as the Wolfcamp shale contains 20 billion barrels of oil and 16 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

I think we should move towards a 100% renewable energy society. It would hurt Oklahoma, but it would make us much more independent.
We are. Many countries are too. It's just happening at the rate these things normally do, which makes it seem sort of invisible. Rather than the light switch flip that is always talked about with regards to renewables vs fossil fuels.

The area shown on the map, interesting enough, has massive wind generation farms in addition to all the oil fields.

Such a blight on the landscape. In some places, no big deal. But, places like the mountains around Ardmore, wind farms are an eyesore. The wind farm view from the top of Mt. Scott sucks as well.
