FWIW, a few years ago my brother and I were talking about buying our parents a new vacuum cleaner; he said it could be any brand as long as it wasn't Dyson. In a previous career, he had to use Dysons, and he was, shall we say, less than impressed with them. The custodians at work had some for a little while, but they couldn't stand up to commercial use, so they're back to commercial vacuum cleaners. Personally, I think they look incredibly cheap, particularly for the prices they charge, but I've not used one, so I can't comment on how well they work. I like my Oreck, but I recently needed a cheap vacuum, so I bought a $49 Bissell Helix bagless from WallyWorld. Dumping the containers is a bit messy, but I'd assume that all bagless vacs are like that. It seems to pick up OK; it's not as good as the Oreck, but it was worth the money I paid for it. I checked the Amazon reviews before I bought it, and, as I recall, they were fairly accurate. I've only had it for a couple of months, so I can't really comment on its durability yet--but for the price, I don't really expect much.
