Apparently Walgreen's is closing 17 locations in the enlightened San Francisco area because of rampant shoplifting.
I confess - never heard of actress Cynthia Nixon of the TV show "Sex and the City" (had heard of that).
Her response to the news:

“The CVS on my corner has started locking up basic items like clothing detergent,” the one-time wannabe New York governor tweeted Saturday.
“As so many families can’t make ends meet right now, I can’t imagine thinking that the way to solve the problem of people stealing basic necessities out of desperation is to prosecute them,” she wrote.
“Why don’t you leave the doors to your posh co-op unlocked, and the closets and freezer stocked. Those in need can come help themselves?” replied former prosecutor Thomas Kenniff, who is running for Manhattan DA.

Was in SF a couple years ago. Wife hurt herself on a charity 5K fun run. Pain kept getting worse so we decided to go to urgent care right B4 they closed where we got a script for something to help with her nerve pain. The only Walgreens in the city open that late was on Castro street (only found out after a very expensive UBER ride to another one). Even if your ok with the gay scene I can't say I recommend going to that street..... especially really late at night

I believe that it was San Francisco that declared a year ago that they would NOT arrest or prosecute shoplifting or "petty theft" under $500.

Anything under $1000 is not considered a criminal act. That also relates to any property crime, burglary, larceny, etc. Police are not even allowed to stop them even if they see the act committed. There are gangs walking into stores and robbing them blind. Think about 10 guys walking in and each walking out with just under $1k. Normal citizens are afraid to go out and shop
