55 gal drums at Midwest? Chemical behind the old skyline restaurant. Drive through the loop road until you see big chemical tanks and semi trailers in the parking lot. Get the blue ones and simply wash them thoroughly. If you are going to store water in them for long periods, be sure to treat it properly and keep from direct sunlight. If you want transport tanks, or hot water for a shower get the black ones. I would not drink from those, but properly cleaned they will keep water hot and be more than safe to use.

That is WAY cool, HH ... I'm still refining my water "plan" ... We are picking up a couple of decorative barrels tomorrow to set up in the front, now that the City has said it's okay with them ... :rolleyes2

GC's finally quit trying to talk to me about how to set it up and said "Whatever. You just tell me how you want it and I'll make it happen." :woot: (Bless his heart ...  ) I'll try to post pics when it's done ...

Homemade Berkey filtration and homemade chlorine.

Berkey material supply list:

2 five gallon buckets - homedepot, lowes, etc (http://www.homedepot.com/catalog/productImages/300/b0/b0991248-1832-4628-ad92-3cc9ec8b974a_300.jpg)
1 ceramic candle filter (http://www.amazon.com/Doulton-Stera...3597226&sr=8-1&keywords=ceramic+candle+filter)
1 spigot (http://www.amazon.com/Tomlinson-Cer...qid=1393599930&sr=8-6&keywords=plastic+spigot)

Method:

I could describe it, but it is easier to just show it -

Chlorine supply list:

Pool shock - the higher the calcium hypochlorite CH, the better (http://www.spaandpoolstore.com/poolife-turbo-shock-5lb-22-49-lowest-price/)
Water (http://csidesigns.com/flowgeeks/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/river-water.jpg)

Method:

1 level teaspoon 49% CH (1 heaping half teaspoon 68% CH or higher) to one gallon water = Stock Chlorine Bleach. Let sit for 20min after mixing and you have stock chlorine.

Make sure the pool shock only contains calcium hypochlorite and "other" ingredients, nothing else. By having pool shock in a dry powder form, you can make chlorine bleach whenever you need to as the storage life of the powder is indefinite. This is a better method since stock chlorine bleach degrades in 6-8 months.

The 5 lbs of pool shock I linked you to will create 960 gallons of chlorine. That amount of chlorine will purify 3,686,400 gallons of water. That's enough purified water to last someone 60 years at a usage rate of 150 gallons a day.

Chlorine measurement needed to treat water:

1 tsp chlorine for every 5 gallons of water - let chlorine treated water set awhile and aerate before consuming. The longer the better, but an hour should suffice if necessary.

We had chlorine pills and iodine to put in our canteens when the only source of water was a muddy creek or rice paddy water.
I wonder if anyone still has those little pills? Each was the right size for a canteen.

It would be more like the Chlor-floc, but ours didn't have the flocculant in it to clarify the water.
I might have to order some of those. Wouldn't mind having some in the backpack, or in the boat.
