I always wondered what this gun is for...It's a heavy, sub 4" barrel, DAO single stack 9mm.

Not big enough to be overly accurate, not small enough to be better than other 9mm and heavy with DAO trigger.

Not being sarcastic, what role does it fill?

Its not heavy, I barely notice it. Its a light DA pull but it is actually a striker fire. I use it as my carry gun. I feel that it fills the role of a great cow. It is similar to old gen S&W's, 1911's, and other thin single stack handguns of metal frame. I got a LEO discount on mine at H&H and it was the only one..i had to buy it. Everyone carry's 1911's. i feel the 9mm is just as good as a .45acp. shot placement, penetration, and training make any gun great.
