Actually, I generally do not disclose I have insurance for my routine office visits or urgent care visits, as the "cash" discounted price is less than the "negotiated rate" that United Healthcare has with the providers around. The urgent care visit I had two weeks ago cost me $88, but the insurance negotiated rate I would have paid out of pocket was over $130. Electricity is not a comparable market to current health insurance systems, as there is still at least some semblance of competition in the health insurance industry. I can call around and shop premiums on insurance. Outside of solar or wind, your power company is whomever is wired to your house; one cannot comparison shop in that market. That, and I use electricity every day. I do not use my health insurance every day. I can assume the risk and go uninsured, and very possibly make it though my day the same as I would have without health insurance (you know, unless I get the flu, or AIDS, or hit by a bus or something). Not so with electricity. In the longer run, the whole new legislation really won't affect me and those with health care insurance as much as they would like to admit. I will no longer pay premiums to a company but rather will pay a tax. My biggest beef is forcing people to purchase a product, or taxing them if they opt out. That, and people and the media and the politicians do not distinguish health care from health insurance. A doctor provides me health care, an insurance company provides me health insurance; the two products are mutually exclusive.
