Several tricks out there. A lot of guys take it apart and pour boiling water over/in the metal parts to start the cosmoline removal. A trick for getting it off the stock is to wrap it in newspaper, wrap that in a black trash bag, and set it on your car dash to bake for a few hours. Take it out and wipe it down.

So what kind of Mosin did you get?

Do the black trash bag, it works pretty well.

Take a rag to the range and put 20 or so rounds through it pretty quick and wipe down afterwards.

Definitely range clean if you're using milsurp ammo, just Windex on a cleaning pad (one direction, remove pad before pulling rod back through) and then a thorough cleaning at home.

Here's what I have done that works well.

1. Buy two large aerosol cans of non-chlorinated brake parts cleaner. Grab a bucket if you don't have one as well.
2. Completely disassemble weapon. Remove all metal (with exception of crossstock bolt screw and the metal sling hole protectors (if they're there))
3. Place all metal parts in bucket and clean with brake parts cleaner. Wipe dry. You also spray down the reciever/barrel group too.
4. Take next brake parts can and hose down the stock and handguard. The shellac/cosmoline will just melt off. remaining sludge can be wiped off. Spray down dark spots as well.
5. Take fine (220 Grit or smaller) sandpaper to wood
6. stain wood with your choice of stain/oil/etc.
7. reassemble rifle

I also highly recommend getting a pistol cleaning rod (~10") and putting a 20 gauge brush on the end of it. Place this cleaning rod in a drill, douse the brush with hoppes/cleaning agent and put it in the chamber. Spin on low for ~20-30 sec, redouse, then spin the other way for another 30 sec. make sure to avoid jamming the brush into the barrel itself. This will clean any caked on cosmo/gunk in the chamber (a common fault of mosins).

Depending on the stain chosen and the rifle I can take a gunked out 91 to almost new in ~12 hours.

is it tula or izhevsk maunfacture? round or hex receiver? and a date. most people can gather the particulars from these three pieces of info.tula will have a star with an arrow in it. izhevsk will have a wreath with a hammer and sicle in it

Izhevsk is a triangle with an arrow in it. The wreath with the hammer is just the Russian crest of the period time not the manufacturer
