22-250 compared to .223, .22 wildcat and Rem .17

pic below shows 22-250 packs way more powder over 5.56
.223 would not be my first choice for deer, but loads of folks have killed lots of deer with .223.

so who's using 22-250 for deer? and what size bullets (55+ grn) are you using?

left to right: 22-250 ... .5.56 ... Rem .17 ... .22 wildcat

i have railed a few rounds of 22-250 at consumables i used it 2 years ago on elk in flagstaff dropped that bull in his tracks

used it on mules in northern nevada and many whitetails on the family property down on the farm

its a good round dang thing is a cannon and shoots straight

only reloads i use a 65 grain sierra and 45 grains of powder to push it

im kinda fond of my 7mm ultra mag for shots over 250 yards though

I have a friend at work that shoots a Remington VLS 22-250 and he has killed several deer with it. There's a lot of people that disagree with using it and think you need a tank to take down a deer, but waiting for the right shot and shot placement is the ONLY thing that matters! I'm going to try my new 223wssm this year and see how it does. The powder charge on it makes the 22-250 look like the wildcat! Good luck this year.

My 22-250 was 14 for 14 on whitetails here in Oklahoma, 55gr. Sierra Gameking bullet (can't recall the part number) only 2 body shots and they went down PDQ but then again you put a bullet in the right spot they are going down! now my 17 Remington has replace the 250 for yotes I doubt I'd shoot a deer and you have to have a 55gr or heavier bullet for deer hunting! heaviest I have seen for the 17 is a 36gr. and that would take one of those special 1-6 twist barrels. The 223 has worked well so far with the Sierra bullets. I would say with the right bullet placement the 223 or 22-250 would work as well as my 284 Win, 243, or 308! the only thing that matters is if you can put that bullet where it needs to go and are %100 confident you can do it everytime. Look forward to some pics. Later,

Kirk

shot several nice deer at 200-300 yd range with the 55 gr sierra's game kings. Never had to shoot them more than once, and their innards were pretty much jelly. Typically I'll use my 06 or the .243WSSM

I've killed 2 deer with a 22-250. The first was shot with a factory load with, if I remember correctly, Remington 55 gr. bullets.

I took the second at a GPS measured 360 yards using a Speer 70 gr. Semi-Spitzer. I used the same bullet to take a deer with a 222.

The nice thing about the Speer bullets is that they even stabilize well in 1:12 twist barrels like mine and I've heard they'll even stabilize in 1:14 twist barrels.

From the Oklahoma regulations for deer hunting:

Rifles: Centerfire rifles firing at least a 55-grain weight soft-nosed or hollow-point bullet and having an overall cartridge case length of 1 1/4 inches or longer
