I don't drive a Prius but do drive a Nissan Versa. Not 57mpg but more like high 30s on the highway. However, much much much cheaper to get into than a Prius. As a driver of one, I'll say this. I hate it at times and love it at times. I originally got it when I was blowing through gas driving all over to visit clients. A few years ago I went out on my own and now work from home with half my clients in different states so I don't have a boss yapping at me to drive around and swing doors. Thus, I drive a lot less and mileage is not a big deal for me. What is a big deal is that I can't go hunting in my Versa. When taking a trip, the gas mileage is great but that's not often enough for it to be a big deal. It has no power (my wife and daughters tease me about it), no style, and no functionality other than A to B. If I was a salesman again and A to B was all that mattered on the best budget it meant the difference in $50 per week in gas or $150 per week in gas, I'd buy it again. However, I can't see any other scenario where the benefit outweighs the sacrifice. Also, they hold no resale value so I'm freaking upside down in it and can't really even trade it in. Looks like I'll be buying a beater to hunt in and keeping the Versa 'till my daughter turns 16 and she can drive it since she thinks making fun of me in it is so great.
