I had a similar incident happen. I changed banks and closed an account. Two years later I get a notice from the DA's office that I have written a hot check and I need to make restitution or they are gonna file charges. When I found out what bank it was on I told them I had closed that account a year ago and asked them to have an officer come out so I could file a report. No way that check was mine, I thought. A little more investigating and it came to light that the merchant I had written the check to almost 18 months earlier had neglected to deposit it in a timely manner. Cost me 10 times what I wrote the check for to get it all cleared up. Lesson learned ... don't just keep a running total of your checking account. GC thinks I am daft because I reconcile the checkbook every single week and if a check doesn't come through in a timely manner I am making phone calls ... ask GlockGirl what happens when you don't deposit my check ... ;)
