This argument reminds me of the joke about not all Muslims betting terrorists, but all terrorists being Muslim. Kind of the same... Not all mentally Ill are spree killers, but all spree killers are mentally Ill. While I hate the idea of locking up everyone who is diagnosed as mentally unstable, it's pretty obvious at the current system we are using sucks. The way things are now, even those who are EOD'd only get stabilization treatment and are sent right back into the community. Many times the is a 72 hr. process. At the most it's a 28 day process. We simply don't have the facilities to deal with them. That is why our prison system is so heavy with mentally Ill persons. I've seen the number of offenders that are taking psychotropic meds triple in the past 15 years. Part of that is better healthcare for inmates, but a lot of it is simply more mentally ill offenders. I attribute much of it to chemical imbalances in their brains due to to heavy meth usage. The correlation of bipolar and paranoid-schizophrenic offenders to mental illness is astounding.
