Oklahoma is still short of rainfall going into winter and the habitat has not had the necessary rain needed in most of the state to carry the deer herd thru. I expect to see some die off of our herd. In SE Okla the deer that I observed during the last week of BP had ribs showing and looked poor. Since the area did not have sufficient rain to plant my 10 acres of food plots I did not plant. The acorns are few and far between and the trees that are producing have small nuts compared to normal. Acorns are high in fat and allow the deer to make it thru the winter in good shape. We are not out of the woods yet. We could use 15" of rain in SE Okla this winter to get the habitat in better shape. Unfortunately the habitat will be going dormant because of the cold and the fall growing season is about over. This winter,if it is harsh, could see some die off of deer. The deer need the feeders to keep going during the winter instead of turning off after rifle season. Protein pellets need to be added to the corn by Christmas to help get the deer thru the harshest part of winter which will be January until greenup. We could use 2" of rain state wide this week. Pray for rain.
