We sent all our kids to appleseeds. They were about that age when they went. They do a great job teaching safety and basic rifle marksmanship as well as a little history.

I would say Appleseed too, but keeping in mind it is more about marksmanship fundamentals than it is about firearms safety and operation. Daniel might elaborate more but I think anyone going to an Appleseed needs to have a decent understanding of how to operate their firearm and the safety rules that go with it....I could be wrong though.

Howdy, I am the State Coordinator for Project Appleseed here in Oklahoma. Yes, we work with a lot of kids in that age range. When it comes to kids, it isn't so important that they are already familiar with the operation of their rifle, or even that they are already familiar with gun safety -- we can teach all of that. The most important thing is that they are mature enough to actually listen to what we teach, and follow instructions. I know how distractable some youngsters (especially boys) can be -- if the parent doesn't think the child is mature enough to listen and follow safety instructions, then he isn't ready for marksmanship training. It's up to the parent -- but if a child (or anyone else) demonstrates that he is unable or unwilling to follow our safety procedures, we will not allow him to remain on the line. All minors need to attend with an adult. We provide a lot of individual attention to youngsters at our events, and typically have them shooting different targets and courses of fire than the adults, and usually shooting from a rested position, until they get a good grasp on the fundamentals. We also have a variety of .22 loaner rifles available. One of our instructors even has a couple Cricket rifles for the very small kids.

You can check out our website and schedule of events at www.appleseedinfo.org. We should have our first 2016 events posted very soon. And feel free to have your friend email me with any questions at ok@appleseedinfo.org.
