I have a new Redfield. It's OK, especially if your dad has never looked through anything better. not nearly as good as my VX3 or Monarch, not nearly as expensive either.
SWFA has a forum also. opticstalk.com Lots of reviews on there by independent guys. General opinion is that the ziess conquest is "best in class" for the $300-600 range if you want to spent that much.

Check ebay. I haven't found anybody that can beat them. I bought a Nikon Monarch 6X24 with AO for a little over $500. The big box stores get $800.

The thing I worry about on eBay is fakes. How do you tell the difference? I suppose only buying from a guy who's selling one or two scopes, which seem to be his used personal scopes would be okay. High volume sellers scare me. Where are they getting those scopes???
