I can't do funerals. If there is any possible way I can avoid going to my parent's funerals without being ostracized by the entire state of Oklahoma, I won't be going.

The last funeral I went to was my grandfather's. He was the best dude you could ever meet, and I spent a ridiculous amount of time with him. The memories are there and not going anywhere, and the funeral didn't help me at all. I walked out of it in the middle because I was crying like a ***** in a room with a speaker and hundreds of people. Good times. I know a lot of people feel different, many of my family members included - and that's fine if that's what they need. This is just me talking.

One my my best friend's lost his dad way young about a year ago. I get dressed, drive by the church before the funeral where I see dozens of people streaming in and more or less have a panic attack. I never went in. Luckily he's known me forever and understood I didn't do it because I didn't care.

If you're going the funeral home route, then yes, they have to let you use whatever casket you bring to the dance, and they can't charge you a handling fee or any extra charges. That's federal law.

Can't speak to OK law regarding cemeteries.

I kind of like the idea of cremation jewelery (carrying a bit of your loved one around in a necklace) or making ammo out of it.

I was extremely close to my maternal grandfather , I missed his funeral. It's something I will never forgive myself for.
At my paternal grandfather's funeral, someone gave me the old "He looks so good, I expected to him get up and walk away", I thought "BS he looks dead to me". I hate that line, dead people look dead.
As far as my wishes go, I don't care, do something cheap

I am from Lone Wolf, OK, originally, and during the Depression of 30's the Farmers Coop there started a funeral home if you will. They started a funeral home then and with memberships. I am a member and the most expensive cost of the funeral these days is the casket. Now, being an old guy I have buried many relatives including parents and grandparents on both sides via the coop funeral home. This Coop saved me a lot on the money side. Having said that, I have decided for cremation. Why should I take up valuable land for a "worthless" burial. Just sayin', kids from an old guy. OH, I don't pay any annual dues either, all paid up.

quote: Huh? I don't think He's going to ever put this body back together. That's the beauty of it, we get a new one.

Thanks NikatKimber, I never thought of it like that, but it makes perfectly good sense to me..

A couple of years ago, when my ex father in law died, I was at the funeral home to pay my last respects, and I struck up a conversation with the folks at the funeral home. I asked if there was any law in Oklahoma that made having a sealed and lined coffin mandatory ( in some states the coffin must have a metal liner). The owner of the funeral home told me that in OK. it didn't matter what you were buried in, that he had seen people buried in a burlap sack, or in home made coffins so rickety, that he was surprised that the bottom didn't fall out. So my plan, is in the near future, to build my own coffin. I don't plan on using it for years, so I'll store quilts or some such in it until it is needed. I've looked up plans for a coffin on line, Mother Earth News has some and so do others. Heck I even have a wood working catalog around here that not only sell plans, but the metal hardware if you want to buy it.

Please don't bury me
Down in that cold cold ground
No, I'd rather have 'em cut me up
And pass me all around

Love me some Prine.

The wife looks at me kinda funny whenever I walk through the house singing "beats his old lady with a rubber hose" though. But hey... that's the way that the world goes round.
