sight alignment consistency, and trigger control.

how are your groups with the .22? with a scoped rifle?
How is your eyesight?

Instruction on basic rifle marksmanship, under the eyes of a decent instructor who can diagnose problems well, will have you shooting 6 inches at 100 yards with iron sights, within a couple of hours. That rifle is capable of better than that; even with 55gr bulk ammo, but it will take work on the basics. If you have not sought face to face professional instruction, or even free competent instruction, I would highly encourage it. If not, you will develop bad habits that will make good shooting pure luck.

Like he said, the gun can almost assuredly shoot better. If your eyes don't cooperate with irons, you can look at a scope, or see if the right glasses/contacts could help (it made a difference for me).

I don't know what sights your gun has, but with A2 sights (fixed front post, A2 adjustable rear), free float handguard, I think RRA 2-stage trigger, and 55gr FMJBT ammo I was able to shoot this at 50yds. Apparently I forgot my micrometer that day, but that's about .75".

Glass (magnification) helps you "see" better. It will not help you shoot better.
The proper application of the fundamentals of basic rifle marksmanship is what both targets shown above demonstrate.

Negative on recommendations to get a red dot or scope. What that target demonstrates cannot be fixed with different equipment. It's the indian not the arrow.

Take that new rifle to an Appleseed and learn the basics of marksmanship. Start at 25 and work your way out.

Good on you for seeking feedback and trying to learn.

my grandfather and uncle were both very good shots, they taught me when i was young to shoot reasonably well, USMC taught me to shoot a whole lot better. iron sights require practice, and more practice, until your sight picture becomes automatic. if you center the front post in the rear aperture, and concentrate on seeing the front post in focus, your rear peep will appear to be fuzzy and the target will also appear to be fuzzy, deep breath let it out slowly, when about 1/4 of that breath left begin squeezing the trigger. holding center of bullseye is difficult with iron, practice holding at the 6 o'clock and walk the bullet into the center with elevation and windage. holding at the 6 will give you a consistant point to hold on.

i need glass because i'm 70 and my vision is no longer 20/15, i would only use iron sights at 50 yards if shooting for a score. with a 308 i can make head shots on silhouette targets, but it's not a scoring group, just solid hits.

practice, and more practice, get a snap cap and dryfire to get a feel for your trigger. looking at your target you put many into the black, that's a plus

Besides Practice, practice, practice, a light clean breaking trigger will make a world of difference in getting those groups tighter. Nothing worse than a long pull gritty trigger.
