I have some from my hard cast flat nose 4570 did tk the gel. Didn’t recover projectile of cours, but you can see the effect on gel.
In roughly the second block the case bullet appeared to tumble a little, but then righted itself and zipped right out the back. Still had enough ass behind it after all that gel to still smack the berm 100yds away and leave a fairly decent impact amount of dirt thrown into the air.

From what I’ve seen in other stuff, the hard cast will likely zip right through with no expansion (tested a 180 hard cast and coated myself and it went through 33 inches of gel and a back board without a hitch. Here’s a picture of that same bullet that I managed to recover in a 40sw test, only becuase it bounced back and landed on my table. Haha. Zero deformation. Cast just bore a hole and create minimal “spider” trauma as I’ve started calling it. Great for hogs and heavy critters where you need deep penetration though.
For dangerous game, non mushroom ammo is preferred as penetration to the vitals is paramount. HP ammo will dump its energy into the skin and never penetrate far enough to be fatal. Solids are the preferred bullet in Africa for that reason.

Wow! I’m a pretty good guesser.

Mass in motion is an amazing thing. I remember reading accounts from early in the 19th century domestic donniebrook of fellas seeing a cannon ball slowly trundling across a battlefield try to stop it with their foot and having a leg removed by the enterprise. Through and through well placed is hard to beat.

Oh I totally understand that. I was just explaining what I had seen with hard cast so far. My primary wild boar round is a 405 hard cast flat nose 4570 and my 10mm 180gr hard cast flat nose.

Funny enough, I have a 30/30 hard cast load with trail boss that is so slow, you can actually see it in the air on a sunny day at the right angle. It was the first hard cast I shot into gel. It’s penetration was astounding and, honestly, not what I was expecting

That same gel/rack setup had no problem catching 338 RUM, 375HH, 4570 +P (non cast), and 300WM (plus every other caliber I tested). Hard cast just zipped through and didn’t give a care. Good to know that fat and slow still wins the day! ;-)

Just a little bit of recovered bullet porn

This is totally normal and expected, just wanted to share the findings. So these are .40/10mm Barnes solid copper HP recovered from dry berm at 25yds. These were test loads fired from carbines. These passed through the target board and then impacted the dry dirt behind, where they were recovered. As expected (and as is the norm for Barnes in all calibers I’ve tested) they do not expand at all in dirt, and merely “deform”. In gel/liquid/flesh, they expand due to hydraulic force rather than physical impact. Just kind of a neat thing to recover. Notice the one that managed to fuse a shotgun pellet into the nose upon impact. Will share the updated ballistics gel results for them once I finish development!
