Adding Scope to rifle

Picked up a Ruger 10/22 a few weeks back, Took it to the range saturday, apperantly i'm not too good with open sites. Thinking of putting a scope on it. Looking at the scopes online and at Academy Is this something easy to do. Tips tricks. Don't want to pay too much for the scope Found several for $50 area that seem good.

Adding a scope is not difficult but deciding which scope, mount and rings can be confusing. Since we don't know your location other than the US we can't guide you to a local gun shop which could be helpful. They might even install it and bore sight for free.

I put a vortex crossfire II on my 10/22, I used a leopuld rail and rings.

Unless you bought the 10/22 used, it should have come with a scope mount. You will need a small screwdriver to remove the set screws in the receiver and install the scope mount screws. Figure out what scope you want. A short scope is best on a Ruger with the factory mount, because it has a short receiver, and a long scope will sit too far to the rear for eye relief in proper shooting positions. There are several options for short fixed power scopes in the 4x magnification range in the $50 and under price range if you look around on Midway's website. The factory Ruger mount accepts Picatinny, Weaver, and 3/8" dovetail rings. The picatinny and Weaver styles are much more secure, so go with one of them. On a traditional stocked rifle it is best to mount the sight as low as possible, to minimize the amount you'll need to raise the comb to get cheek weld -- so get some rings marked "low" as long as the objective lens of the scope is 40mm or smaller. This is the route I would take. Vortex optics are the shiznit.
