When I was in Macedonia in 2000 we had an A-10 missing an engine and half a wing land successfully.

Interesting time period to be in strange places far away... Wink.

That makes nearly half a dozen such incidents I believe, wingless, filigreed, et cetera. The Warthog will remain an absolutely essential aircraft to our mission as a nation for the next 25 years probably, unless we go M.A.D. before then. Frankly I am surprised and almost disappointed no one has pushed the button yet. If this program gets the axe, it comes at a high cost to Air Assault Task Force.
Thankfully Ms. Bye flew with her gut, or you can bet an incident would have been used a reason to cut a program that some want to see phased out in favor of more flying computers and aircraft so fast that by the time you hear them, they're 4 klicks out. Shock and awe has it's place, but I want my ears to ring and feel the heat.

I've seen a T-38 jet trainer land and take out several runway markers and let me tell you, the IP (Instructor Pilot) didn't get any awards. In fact the Wing commander was mad as a wet hen. He said I want that pilot grounded and he is to meet a Flying Evaluation Board. Another time a student pilot on solo came in again on a T-38, turn on base and the aircraft was upside down of and he got excited and ejected inot the ground. These aircraft land at 180 knots, (around 220 MPH) flare and the nose drops and usually there isn't a problem. Another time a 2nd Lt came in and looked worried and wanted to self-eliminate from the flying program, the Flight Surgeon talked him into staying and that afternoon a T-33 created a hole about 20 feet in diameter and we picked up pieces of 2nd Lt John Darby... I wouldn't mention his name but both parents are gone now. In some of these aircraft accidents there isn't 10 pounds of flesh remaining if that.

This is incredible. My daughter (the one building a bronco with me) wants to fly the A10 and go career in military. Trying to get her into CAP, but it's proving difficult durring Corona to get in contact with anyone that can help us get her in.
Keep trying, as a father you know you'll do anything for her. don't ever forget, Trying is living, Quitting is forever. If the Regular AF isn't hiring, look for Guard Units. There may be a way forward there. It was the way in for me.

Wish I still had contacts in CAP, but mine are 30 years out of date. Good luck to your daughter.

You might check out C.W. "Mover" Lemoine's YouTube channel. He was a fighter pilot, and he frequently interviews other former military pilots, with one of his normal tracks being "how did you become a military pilot?" Most, if not all, of the ones I've watched have gone to plan B (if not C or D) to get into military aviation, and a lot of it boils down to persistence, or as Mover puts it, "make them tell you no."
