Little Rock may not be a likely terrorism target or a gang crime hotspot, but the Arkansas capital has decided to follow the example of high-security cities by expanding electronic surveillance of its streets.

A police car with a device that photographs license plates moves through the city and scans the traffic on the streets, relaying the data it collects to a computer for sifting. Police say the surveillance helps identify stolen cars and drivers with outstanding arrest warrants.

It also allows authorities to monitor where average citizens might be at any particular time. That bothers some residents, as well as groups that oppose public intrusions into individual privacy. The groups are becoming more alarmed about license plate tracking as a growing number of police departments acquire the technology.

OKC has/had one of those readers...Oklahoma law forbids the storing of tags tho.

OKC PD has 16 of those permanently mounted on the new 2013 Interceptors. 4 cars are equipped to be used with a trunk mounted portable system. They have one pelican case with mag mount cameras that can be moved to any of those 4 cars. This breaks down to 4 cars per division, 5 if they have the portable system in use. Last week they got 3 stolen cars, missed a 4th cuz it hit while the officer was filing up with gas. They have only had it in use 16 actual man hours, but have had them installed for several weeks. You'll recognize the car cuz it looks like Wall-E is riding on the roof. I'll try and post pictures of one of the cars tomorrow.

Shenanigans... More moot feel good bullspit to get the public off their trail. Duck and dodge legislation. When was the last time a government, state or federal, acted in the honest best interests of a citizen?
