Reminds me of a guy on Antiques Road Show who had an Confederate sword that was valued around 20K. He said he found it the attic of a relative’s house and used it to cut water melons, well not anymore that he discovered the value.

If it has numbers on the blade in front of the guard or on the tang it is 30s-40s mfg for non-comms. If it has japanese writing in tang its probably a lot older.
They usaully didn't take the fancy parts of the sword to war. They took the blades and put them into plain handles and scabbards.
From my limited knowledge researching one years ago.

I've had this sword since the 80's so it's not a recent find. I am just curious now if it's a real of a fake. Looks to be Chinese maybe?!?!? There are no marking anywhere on it.
I also have an older sword that is rusted and I was told it was found in a river(Potomac River is what I was told) who knows for sure. I will post pics of it too.

Nihonto are like diamonds - most people know what they got. Yes there is a chance that you found a forgotten masterpeice, just as likely that you are using crown jewel for a door stop; of course it never hurts to check ;)

Yeah, they also took the swords and cut the grip down to regulation length. If it was an old non-military sword that had been converted it would have a partial makers mark on the handle. Partial because part of it would be cut off when it was shortened for military use. Since the sword looks to have numbers only, I would agree with Mr.Ed here and say 30s-40s for non-comms.
