If it helps, I think you can rent the smaller rollers as well. Might save you a little bit of coin for something you may or may not ever use again.

Thanks I saw that. But I think this is one of those things that I'd use more than once (even if just an excuse to drive the tractor LOL) and maybe help a neighbor or two. I often buy things that I could rent if I can afford it because I like having "capabilities" added to my life. Next will be an entry level 110v welder; perhaps I'll make a thread for that when the time comes.

Where are you located? Your tractor might not pull 400lb, but mine would probably pull a couple of thousand. I'll bet somebody around you could help out.

Upon learning more, I am calculating that the 10cu ft trailer full of dirt that I had trouble pulling up the 20-30 degree slope probably weight more like 500-700lbs so I may be able to do this with my smaller tractor but I would be looking for help if I could not. I am leaning towards the 270lb roller though right now but I haven't decided for certain.

The best way to compact now soil is to water it.

Should I water BEFORE I roll it? I'm talking about if I dump mounds of dirt into low spots and give a quick rake before making a pass with roller? Or, is it better to roll then water?

It's better to make sure the soil you are dumping has the proper moisture content before it is spread to be compacted. Too wet or too dry it wit compact correctly. Are you planting sod over the compacted material or wth are you doing where you need to have so much compaction?

Ummm, wrong.
It's a lawn, he's not building a structure on it. Oh BTW, watering ALONE is adequate to compact soil. I do it by the million cubic yards. Been working that angle for 25 years and yes, it's an approved method if the lift is less than 4" and that's for structural purposes.
So, I'm not wrong just because you don't know engineering.
