Are individual-to-individual trades treated the same as an actual sale?

I'm looking for someone to point me to where I can get an answer to a legal question regarding an individual-to-individual firearms transaction.

I have a guy who is interested in trading pistols with me. However, I just found out that he's a resident of Arkansas, and I'm an Oklahoma resident.

My assumption is that I can't legally trade pistols with him because of the state of residency difference anymore than I could sell him one of my pistols for the same reason.

Am I correct?

Obviously I want to keep it legal.
