I've been researching and shopping mowers also. Drove past your new house yesterday my way to Rt 66 mowers in Bristow. Available service and dealers is a consideration also.
66 deals Dixie Chopper and Spartan which has connections to Bad Boy. 57 dealer in Chandler has Spartan and few others. I think there is a Bad Boy dealer in Kellyville.
For your budget I would look at entry level commercial or residential that is semi-commercial. The things I look for are deck quality, engine, hydraulics. Are the hydraulics serviceable and heavy enough to do the job? Rough or smooth lawn? Mowing some pasture?
Almost all companies have a wide range of quality products, hence " my Toro is great," or my Toro is pos".
I'd say more, but have to go.
Edit:
I am looking at Bad Boy, Scag, Spartan, or another Hustler. For the money the Spartan RZ HD looks pretty good. However, Spartan, started by cofounder of Bad Boy, just sold to Toro. I'm hesitant to what that may mean for Spartan's future. Everything else I've looked at so far comparable to RZ HD is $1-3,000 more. Just started comparing John Deere. May stay with he 48" Hustler Fastrak for a while longer.
