My better half has mentioned replacing the carpet. I need advice from the carpet/flooring experts. We have two kids (10 and 6) and two inside dogs, cairn terrier and GSD. All four are house trained, however, the kids eat in the den 50% of the time. Accidents happen all to often. I want plush with color variations but thats a whole other thing. Stain protection and standing up to wear a must. Suggestions on padding too, please. Thanks in advance.

No matter what the carpet you get - get the best padding. Makes a huge difference.
Also, if you settle for really cheap carpet you will notice the wear in a year or less. For stains : get the stain resistant kind but also get something with more than one color in it. Ex: Beige w/specks of a darker beige. It really helps

Everything Bulbboy just said. Padding makes a huge difference. I also have speckled beige carpet and it does help cover those random accidents. Shampoo the high traffic areas once a month and it will look like new for a long time.

Well like everyone else says spend some money on pad and when it comes to the rug you will usually get what you pay for. If you already know an installer you might talk to them about certain ones to avoid or steer you in the right direction.

I don't know your price range or I might be able to make some more specific recommendations. Also I wouldn't fall for the big box stores whole house package prices because in the long run they are basically overcharging you for stuff you don't need to make up the difference.

Thicker pad isn't always better. Too much give and your carpet delaminates over time and then falls apart. You buy padding because you want softness but in reality you need density. Get something stain resistant and maybe some slight multi-coloring. What about a vinyl plank product that looks like wood? Possible to do part of the room vinyl and part carpet? Just a suggestion
