I can tell you're in a ticklish situation, and this is how I would handle it. I'd call the home office late in the afternoon, tell them you're on site and everything looks Ok but you have to check out something that looks a little strange and you have 3 pistols on, and you're loading your AR10 with a chest rig. You have also laid out some claymores around the car. Now, whatever you do don't tell them that you are really at home in your recliner, watching Baywatch, eating apple pie and having three fingers of your favorite bourbon. Don't do that. Also tell them if you're not home by midnight to call the FBI and mobilize the hostage rescue team. One of two things will happen, You might get a nice raise, or they will fire you immediately. Normally I’ll carry a G19 sized pistol edc, everywhere. If I’m bound for the woods, farm or out for a day going across/ out of state then I have a AR and several loaded mags with me. Rather that’s a 12.5 pistol or 16” rifle depends on my mood.

Those with ‘truck guns’ how do you secure them? I would hate to have a firearm stolen in a vehicle breakin while shopping etc.

As once told to me by a firearms instructor many moons ago. "A handgun is used to defend yourself while you get to a rifle or shotgun"

I've heard that many times , my experience has been you're going to fight with what you have on you. I feel like if you could get back to a truck gun you could just leave.

I think the previous suggestions of upgrading to 9mm is a reasonable accomadation to your situation. Also, carrying a long arm such as a folding pcc which uses the same magazines as your pistol would make a terrific back up. You can get 200 yds out of something such as a sub2k easily. They're cheap, reliable, and they fold up into a very small package that is easy to take with you ..rather than leaving it in the vehicle all the time. A couple of 30-33 rnd mags to go with it, and you've got just about any scenario covered.

First off, I’m the last person that needs a lecture on preparedness especially involving firearms, and second, I think trying to avoid a known dangerous area is just common sense.
Depending on where I’m going, I either carry a Glock 30s or a Smith 342, and I ALWAYS have either an AR or my combo gun in my truck and both on road trips. During hunting season, there’s a Benelli or Beretta semi auto 12 in the truck too.

If you're driving Highways 75 or 81 or on I35, you're traveling along side, following or passing some of the most terrible people on the planet. Drugs, gang, trafficking, etc. Those are THE three paths north. All things bad travel them.

They say the problem with .380 is if you shoot someone with it and they find out about it they will be really mad.

Here's my take. Most people that carry a second pistol do it for reasons like they expect they might be disarmed and this second gun allows them to wait their turn and strike back (think undercover cops doing drug buys). If you are worried about your primary gun going down or not having enough ammo then you should carry a spare magazine. Actually, if you carry a gun you should have a spare magazine any way not just for the added ammo capacity but because many malfunctions (on a clean and otherwise serviceable gun) are magazine-related.

If in your scenario wild animals are a concern then just upgrading your primary gun to something like a .357 or 10mm would be sufficient.

I carry an AR in a safe in my truck at all times with micro chest rig. This adds so much capability to address everything from a Mad Max SHTF get home from out of town scenario to getting a call from my wife as I'm on my way home to say someone just kicked in the front door and I want to go in there with more than a pistol in my hand if I can.

I think the thing to do is consider what is likely and what is very unlikely but catastrophic if it were to occur and decide what level of risk you can live with.

Also, ask yourself if you honestly have the training and ability to do anything about it. I know guys that say things like "I won't go there because I can't bring a gun" yet they are literally useless with one. They couldn't hit the broad side of a barn from inside the barn let alone get the gun out of their cheap holster they've never practiced a draw from. If this is you fix it.

I’m more leery/paranoid when I go to the city. Wife and I were down town pulling up to a stop light and some jackwad pulled a gun on us as we rolled up to it. Kinda aggravated him when we just rolled on through it, like it ruined his day.

I carry a 1911 in 45 with an extra mag or two and have a P365 close when I’m in the vehicle. Depending what I’m doing I’ll have that on me too. When I’m feeding or checking cattle I carry too but I always have a rifle handy for hogs/coyotes so not a big deal, that’s just every day life for me.
