hey guys I just wanted some ideas or feedback about my carry issue. I have a smith and Wesson model 642 with the crimson trace grip and im having a hard time finding a good IWB holster. The issue i am running in to is the grip or butt of the gun seems to stick out more than i would like, I am 510 about 170 and wear semi tight clothing(not super tight just not real baggy). Im left handed and am trying to carry at about 8 oclock. Any holster suggesting would be great. It seems like if the pistol rode a little lower than it does with a blackhawk holster it would take care of the issue.....Thanks in advance.

I don't know what type of belt you're using, but I was having similar problems that disappeared when I went to a Looper belt. If you're already using a nice gun belt, I don't really have an holster suggestions for you.

The mods may move this thread to the CCW section, but here goes:

I know I sound like a broken record, but I have had nothing but good experiences with Crossbreed's Supertuck holster. It has adjustable ride height and cant. Tilt that bad boy forward, and the grip will move up towards your ribs and is less likely to stick out your backside and announce to everyone "he's got a gun!".

Plus, they really do a nice job of spreading the weight around, making for a comfortable day. They also are very thin (thinner than my SS2), so less bulge.

There are other manufacturers with similar designs that probably work just as well (Comp-Tac, for starters).

There are several makers building a tuckable J frame holster you can tuck a shirt with. If you wear regular cut dress shirts the waist usually has enough room to cover the grip.

Crossbreed seems to be on the A list too.

forget belt holsters for CCW with 642...
too easy to carry in front pocket with a soft blackhawk holster.

lots of folks carry all sorts of junk in their pants pockets.
so long as your 642 doesn't make an obvious print. no one will pay any attention to what's in your front pocket. even with tight jeans...

it'd be hard to beat front pocket access for low profile quick-draw.
only draw back is all the items normally carried in front pocket, now needs to reside somewhere else. my keys, etc now rides in a rear pocket.

for all day comfort ...next step is a 340PD Crimson Trace at 13oz loaded with .357
what really counts is loaded weight...

I pocket carry my J-frame sometimes, but it's not for every day. I'm a slim guy so about half of the pants I own have pockets from which I can't draw easily. All of my blue jeans are a no-go because blue jeans pockets are cut so that drawing from them is tough, and I have one or two pairs of khakis that are too tight in the pockets for my hand to clear quickly with a gun in it. Not only that but you lose oh-so-precious pocket real estate (like you mentioned), and it's hard to draw from a pocket while running or seated. Put all this together and it's a solution that I only use if I'm wearing a shirt that absolutely won't conceal the butt of a gun, or if I'm running out the door and just need something to stuff in a coat pocket.

I will say this for pocket carry, however: it's nice to be able to walk around halfway through your draw without anyone knowing. I can draw from my appendix holster way faster than from my pocket if my hands start at my sides, but if my hands are in my pockets already it's a different story.

Gmyers09, I have a Comp-Tac 2 O'clock for my snub revolver and it's fantastic for me; I can conceal the gun under almost anything. If you have a body type that will let you appendix carry (i.e. you don't have a huge gut that would get jabbed by the gun all day) I would recommend it. I also have a Comp-Tac CTAC for another gun and I imagine that a J-frame would ride in that just fine.

If you do decide to pocket carry, make sure you get a good pocket holster. I like my DeSantis Nemesis. They're like $20 too, so there's no reason not to get one just in case you need to "stow and go."

I like the pocket carry also. Its just hard to figure out where to put everything I usually had in that pocket.

comp tac minotaur, don hume, crossbreed are all good options - but as mentioned a good stiff belt will help every bit as much and make it comfortable and easier.

Some people like all that fancy custom leather (like Glock em Down) and he would be the person to ask if you need to know who the finest is and most reasonable.

I pocket carry a J frame very often myself... and understand the limtations. In hot summer weather pocket guns are a viable option.

If you are seated... your negotiation skills need be up to par... it's about impossible to draw a pocket holster gun from the seated position.

If a guy wants to use up his belt- mounted real estate I'd always suggest going with a the biggest gun he can carry and hide on the waist. I have a good belt hoster for a J frame... and it gets used when that little gun is all I can figure out clothes for.

Galco "Royal Guard" IWB is the one I use when not pocket carrying my 640.
