It actually predates the internet, kinda. I remember it being in gun rags in late 80s and being blamed on something Reagan did about jobs.

I'll need to see a link about this.

BTW, when I was in Vietnam, the ROK forces were using M1 Garands and M1 carbines.

A couple of years later when I was stationed in Korea, they were still carrying the same weapons.
