The body gets used to functioning on less oxygen and many smokers can hold their breath for very long periods of time.

This to me is nothing out of the ordinary.

Long-distance runner/former smoker here.

You are wrong, this is not ordinary. Your cardiovascular system does get used to some changes, but smoking absolutely impedes effective breathing.

The people I hung around always competed with each other it's a guy thing.
The smokers could hold their breath much longer under water than the non smokers.
Maybe they just had more lung capacity.
