Anybody know offhand what would cause a 2008 Chrysler Aspen to do this.......1. try to start 2. gauges go nuts, a clicking is heard under the hood, and car fails to turn over. I have checked the battery and it's good. Unhooking it and then hooking back up doesn't seem to do anything (like resetting the system.) My google fu returned that it is either the battery, but I think it is more along the lines of a defective anti-theft system as the doors won't unlock and the fob doesn't start or do anything either. Any suggestions?

You might want to have the battery load cell tested if you haven't the aspen is nearly the same as the grand cherokee and mine would kill a battery every three years like clockwork and show the same symptoms.

Yeah, even if all the cells are good, it can still have too low of cranking amps to turn over the motor...the heat is hard on these batteries...when you get it tested, it should show the cranking amps it is putting out. Otherwise, it might just not be able to hold a charge. Eithercase, the batt is toast.

Can you jump start it from another vehicle? If you can, battery is probably bad.

This. But I'll add even if you can't jump start it from the other vehicle, the battery still may be what's bad.

Similar symptoms on my Liberty with a completely shot battery - wouldn't even take a jump. Slow charger said it charged it in about 2 minutes - which told me instantly it was shot (not taking a charge). When I pulled it, I noticed it was physically damaged. The plastic case split had from the cold (it was during the Christmas Eve blizzard in OKC).

No, it wouldn't start from a jump either. My wife had the battery tested and it was bad. I did put the battery on the charger (with auto shut off) yesterday and it showed good after about 45 minutes. Evidently the heat in the garage over the weekend was too much for it as some have suggested. Thanks for the insight. I appreciate it.

It's more than likely the battery. I have a jeep wrangler that you can't start and keep running by jumping it if the battery is toast. The reason being the alternator. In my jeep, and assuming your aspen since it's a chrysler product, for the alternator to work there has to be enough electrical current to keep the electromagnetic field from collapsing inside the alternator. Basically, you have to have enough power to keep your alternator "turned on" or it won't run. Older cars didn't have this problem.

Man with words like this, I thought this was a doomsday thread...My 2007 Tahoe likes to drain the battery every so often..
