Holy dadgum! Never see them doing this stuff out in the open. I have never been a PETA supporter but this stuff is just a bit over the top. The huge elephants actually yell out in pain a few times. Sheesh.

I watched "The Cove" a few weeks back and was absolutely shocked by it! Not surprised but shocked!

Guys I worked for a circus and at times helped with the elephants when I first got out of the service and have to call BS on this one for several reasons.

First, if you treated any elephant like that it could and would remember you and it would get revenge. I got knocked cold by one elephant because several days before I had patted it's flank to hard with an open palm. I have swatted a horse's rear harder without upsetting the horse but the elephant took it wrong and flattened me with a swing of her trunk.

Second, if you did mistreat a baby elephant like that it would be to scared to perform in front of people. Elephants are brighter then most people know but like any animal if you really break them they are not good for much.

Third, I have seen bullhooks and hotshots used on elephants but the hotshot is only used if the elephant gets to unruly. If you use it for much more then that it loses it's effectiveness.

Forth, much like the guy that tried to set up GW most of these guys are full of it.

Most of you know I am an animal lover and I would be outraged if I thought this was legit. I think it is BS by someone looking for their 15 minutes of fame.

thank God, the voice of reason. Elephants are EXTREMELY intelligent creatures and can literally throw their weight around like nobody's business.
I found it funny that the captions were talking about the baby elephant being tied up and taken away with the "momma" right there in the picture. if that calf was in distress and vocalized, that "momma" would have had a field day with that entire crew.
Ropes are training tools, just like leashes on dogs. bullhooks are only bad if you hit or stab with them. Using them to coax or maintain a position of a limb isn't anything special.
Now, having said all of that, do I like seeing a majestic "wild" animal pent up and "trained" to perform like that? the simple answer is no. But they have an excellent and established breeding program. Their elephants are much safer than in any Asian or African game preserve where they're very likely to be poached. I'd still like to see them "free" roaming rather than performing tricks, but that's another thread.

I didn't see any lesions or abuse on the slides. As to the buthooks and shocking them, in the scale of the size of them, how much pain do you think is really there?

Seriously, people don't have issues with shock collars for dogs, and cattle prods, because the level is adjustable, and the sheer size diminishes the effect, and to Rick's point, they become ineffective.

As to the ropes and training aids, it actually looks more humane than using a choke collar on dogs. And seriously folks, do you really train an animal by talking to it? I can see it now, "Sit puppy, sit" and the dog look at you like you are an idiot and then pee on the floor. If you don't position the dog to let it know what you want, you are not going to get the result that you want.

Maybe so, but the video of the elephants getting knocked in the skull several times for what appears to be no reason at all is faked?

What about the pictures of the baby elephants?

I have seen full grown elephants ram heads together with enough force to completely flatten a human with no damage what so ever.

As for the babies, you need to understand what is happening before you jump to conclusions. You are taking the word of someone with an agenda when he says they are being abused. I see no abuse outside of the one with the hotshot and having seen baby elephants bowl people over when they get excited, in several cases really hurting someone, I would want to know the whole story before I condemn them. Most of the time it is lightly passed over the skin in a stroking motion.

The only time I have seen a baby elephant really hotshotted was when the mother rejected it but the baby kept trying to nurse. The mother was trying to kill it but the baby did not understand and it took a lot to get the baby away.
