I've always been a skeptic about the rating system in the Classifieds section. 98% of the time, someone either rates it 5 stars, or 1 star - it's almost pointless to have the 2,3 and 4 star ratings. I just looked at an ad that was for a trade + cash for a nicer gun. There was no cash price. Someone rates the ad with 1 star. Seriously? This has been an on-going issue. Time to put a fork in the rating system, it has jumped the shark and serves no meaningful purpose for buyers, or sellers.

I'm sure this post will get rated as 1 star, but that's okay: I realize that the rating system is no legitimate barometer regarding the content of a post.

There's a rating system? /sarcasm

I never pay attention to the stars and I would guess a good chunk of the folks on here who matter don't either.
There are some that argue that their posting of a 1 star rating will let uninformed buyers know that someone's wares are overpriced. I don't buy this argument, for the same reason that I don't think someone rating something 5 stars influences the same audience to purchase an item.

I just looked again, and someone has rated almost all of the ads with 1 star (as has happened many times in the past). This reinforces my argument that the rating system has no merit.

Exactly. The smart shopper is going to do the research and not rely on counting stars before making an offer.
