I too called Coburn's office this afternoon. Per the staffer on the other end of the phone, he is opposed to magazine restrictions and gun bans. He is in favor of non-record keeping UBC's, including those involving private parties. Not where we need to go IMO, as it is a step towards registration. Washington, Jefferson, et al would not be pleased either.

It wouldn't have done a thing to prevent the Sandy Hook Massacre, now would it? I don't think it would have prevented any other mass shooting either, unless you are also talking about some kind of intrusive mental health background check and database. Are we really willing to start taking people's gun rights away for suspected mental instabilities? Sounds like we would be giving away our freedom for the false promise of security.

There are a lot of variations on "improving background checks":
- The Democrat supported UBC for all/nearly all sales public and private, which seems un-doable without creating some kind of registry
- As above with some exemptions for close family, friends, and CCW holders (I think this may be the rumored Schumer-Toomey compromise)
- Something like Sen Coburn seems to support, e.g. expanded inclusion of court adjudicated mental incapacity/commitment data, maintaining the current required checks and allowing voluntary additional use
- Same system as today but requiring additional mental incapacity/commitment data as above

The inclusion of additional mental deficiency data MIGHT be useful in certain extreme cases IF a court adjudicated decision has been rendered. I would also like to see an option for me to tap into NICS for private sales if that was practical. However, I, at all costs, want to prevent the creation of a registry and/or criminalization of private sales.

Coburn is on record saying he'd like for doctors to have the authority to place a patient on the "no-guns allowed" list, along with legal protections for doing so. :(

Interesting article about the credit GOA is taking on moving Coburn away from Schumer: http://www.businessinsider.com/pro-gun-lobby-thwarts-bipartisan-gun-law-2013-4

Key section of the article:

GOA is proud of its obstinacy against gun control. In a New York Times profile of the group last week, its executive director Larry Pratt took credit for scaring away Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) from discussions with Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) about a bipartisan compromise on expanding background checks for gun purchases.

“His staff admitted that it kind of irritated the senator,” Pratt told the paper. “We were told, ‘He’s getting tired of this.’ But when we hear complaints like that, we know we are close to success. We are happy he changed his mind.” He said GOA mobilized its proclaimed 300,000 pro-gun members to inundate GOP lawmakers with phone calls.
