Just got back from the range. Last night my Aunt gave me my Grandpa's Colt Official Police MkIII, so today I had to take it out to the range and try it out. This is my first Colt and my first .38 special. The recoil is very mile compared to my 1911. Makes for some really good accuracy shooting it single-action, had a 2" 6-shot group from 12 yards. after that I decided to back it up a bit, around 40 yds, getting easy hits on a 12"x24" steel target, even shooting double action. well decided to move it back a little further, got around 10/12 hits on the same steel at 80 yds shooting single action. Think I might have to take this little baby deer hunting this fall, does the .38 have the power to take a whitetail from 50-100 yds?

Either way I'm very pleased with the pistol and can't wait to get to shoot it again. Makes it that much better that it belonged to my Grandpa, makes her invaluable to me.

Nice write up, but we need pic's!!!!! If your going to go after deer with her, I'd stay inside 50yds, and make sure you use some type of medium to hardcast SWC, the heavier the better.

I don't think the .38 special meets the minimum requirements for deer hunting in Oklahoma,,,
IIRC from my hunter education class, the .357 Mag is the smallest round for deer.

Whether it is legal or not,,,
I can attest it isn't enough for deer,,,
I love the cartridge and shoot a lot of .38 special,,,
But unless you are very lucky with shot placement it's not enough gun.

It's a manstopper, not a deerslayer,,,
Don't wound and lose a deer with that gun.

Also, if a game warden decides it isn't enough,,,
Say goodbye forever to your grandfathers Colt pistol.

I am very fond of the two Colt Lawman MkIII's that I have. It is essentially the same thing as your OP, but it has a heavy bull barrel. The .38 special equivalent gun to my Lawman was the Metropolitan MkIII and the Metro MkIII was the last DA Colt that NYPD authorized for duty use. It had the reputation of being a very rugged revolver.

Legal or not... I would not try 38 special on deer unless it's a survival (yours) situation. Not to say it won't do it... but unless your at "bow hunting" range and make a very good shot...your probably gonna be chasing a blood trail a long time. 357 Mag is a much better choice... and I'd like a 6 inch gun for that hunting situation.

Keep the pistol and use it...for fun and self defense. I'd be proud to have my grandad's gun. Very nice Colts.
