So my Franken Computer took a dump on me and Ive decided to get a new processor, Board and ram. My case is serviceable and I already have new drives.

Okay, Rule # 1 This is not a million dollar venture.

The computer is a glorified print server - NAS - Fax machine So, Ive been looking at 100 CPU's like the Intel i3-530 and the Core 2 Duo processors..

Is there any advantage to the LGA 775 over th 1156 socket? Are the i series processors worth a darn? should I be looking at a AMD?

I'm not a gamer or power user of any kind. HD video is about as intense as it gets for me.

I looked hard at the Core 2 and i series before ending up going with a budget dual-core AMD (Athlon II X2 240 @ 2.8GHz).

Still the best bang for the buck for my needs. Other than on performance tests, I haven't come close to maxing it out, so I expect it to work well for the next 4-5 years.

What are you going to be running FreeNas?!?!

and i3 is WAYYYYYY too much process for that - look at AMD - they have some very good prices on Dual Cores....

I really thought about freeNas but will probably stick with a licensed copy of XP professional I have. that way I can on the very odd occasion use photoshop, encode video and give me a place to dock a scanner and printer.

for those who care.. I have a 320 GB sata for a logical drive and two 1TB sata's that will get mirrored together to store backup's of pictures and stuff. I'll also be able to RDP into it to Fax PDF's while sitting on my laptop

What kind of memory do you have now? If DDR2 you can probably reuse it. The AMD X2s are pretty cheap but work good for what you need.

Wow that looks like it might be right down my alley. I do have a 2 GB stick of DDR2 I think it's 800 and a whole lot of other computer crap I dont use. After I'm done I'll probably list it in the classifieds just to be rid of it.

Depending on the memory you have now, why not use it instead? I do not know what size case you have but here are some good boards that will use that CPU and the DDR2 you have.
