The computer is a glorified print server - NAS - Fax machine So, Ive been looking at 100 CPU's like the Intel i3-530 and the Core 2 Duo processors..

My NAS box at home runs windows 2003, with software raid 5 across 3 300gb disks. It has an old 800mhz PIII processor and 128mb of ram, and I can still easily saturate the 100mbps connection during file transfers! (well, during downloads... uploads run about 50%) The machine is also a backup domain controller and print server, runs just fine.

So, the cheapest processor you can find should work very nicely for NAS.

Hi,

I used to dislike AMD and really be in camp Intel, but lately I'm not so staunch about it although I still prefer Intel. Go to newegg.com and start looking through processors and the reviews. You will usually find one that stands out in each category and has been ordered thousands of times with thousands of reviews. It might be the "best bang for the buck" or the "heck of a lot of cpu power on a budget".

A NAS doesn't really need a ton of processor power anyway, depending on how it is used. If there are a bunch of clients demanding on it you would possibly need some cpu power, but more likely a disk i/o system that can keep up with the disk requests.

Good luck!!

On a NAS you're more worried about disk and network throughput than processor power. Buy whatever proc you can find cheapest, and an older model of motherboard from a good manufacturer like Asus, then spend the money you saved on more disks to put in a RAID.
