City's H.B. Parsons Fish Hatchery Invites Public to Earth Month Open House on April 17
As part of the City of Oklahoma City's Earth Month celebration, H.B. Parsons Fish Hatchery will open its doors for a public open house from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Friday, April 17. The hatchery is at 10940 N. Meridian, just north of Lake Hefner.
Throughout the day, visitors can see the various boats and equipment staff use to monitor fish populations, learn how hatchery staff raises fish stock for Oklahoma City fishing waters, and learn how biologists test water and build habitats to increase fish populations for anglers.
Bob Martin, Oklahoma City's fishery biologist, will be on hand to talk about the "Close to Home" fishing program and teach residents how hatchery staff helps maintain fish populations in Oklahoma City.
"Fisheries management is not always viewed as an Earth Day kind of event," Martin said, "but we contribute a lot to our local eco-system by ensuring we have healthy fish populations, which not only benefit anglers with higher catch rates but also positively affects the quality of our drinking water."
Operated by the Oklahoma City Parks and Recreation Department, the H.B. Parsons Fish Hatchery is the only municipal fish hatchery in Oklahoma. Through its partnership with the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation and the "Close to Home" fishing program, it raises more than a half-million walleye, striped bass hybrids, channel catfish and hybrid sunfish each year. The fish are stocked in Oklahoma City's three lakes and local "Close to Home" fishing waters.
