The "new" house I will be moving to, probably in about 2 weeks, has 100 amp service. The breaker box has one spot in it that a double pole breaker can be added.

Does "100 amp service" mean that the total load the system can handle is 100 amps at a time?

Anyway, what I want/need is a 30 amp 240 receptacle wired in out in my garage for my welder. Can that be done? If my query about 100 amp service is correct, I'm guessing that could be a problem if I'm welding and the wife is cooking on the electric stove and the AC is on and the dryer is going. Could be a problem even without the welder?

The house is in Mustang. Any OSA'ers that can do the work? Or do you recommend some one that can?

What about upgrading the house to 200 amp service? I also plan to build a small shop out in the back as soon as possible and will want electric service. I will need 2 - 30 amp 240 volt attachments for that - one for the welder and one for the air compressor. Plus several 20 amp, 120 volt plugs and lighting. Would it be cheaper and/or better for the shop to have it's own service (meter)?

TIA!

Yes, 100 amp service means that have a limit of 100 amps at any given point. If you fire up a 50-amp welder and have the oven running 30 amps, and the fridge compressor kicks on, it will likely pop the breaker. You can upgrade to 200 amp, it's not a huge deal. I am currently running a fully equipped 1500 sq ft shop and 2100 sq ft home on a 200 amp service without any problems, we will see if the AC this summer causes an issue. BTW, I run a welder and compressor at the same time, along with the lights (CFLs), radio and the whole house running too.

As said a upgrade will be in order, if we (OGE) service the home you will want to check with our new construction department about upgrading the service as there is a cost associated with it. Also depending on your codes for Mustang you may be able to run the shop off of the home breaker panel, you may not be able to and then will have to put in a seperate breaker panel and meter for the shop.

To be clear, I live outside of the Stillwater city limits, so I don't have to deal with any codes. My shop service comes from the main service breaker at the meter. Like Tjay said, you will need to check with the city if you are in the city limits as well as the service provider. I had to have the meter moved from the house to the pole when I built my shop for example. The shop was going to be on top of the underground line and they required I take responsibility of the line from the pole with a structure over it.

I want to be clear - you are saying there is cost from OGE associated with upgrading the house service to 200 amp? Or, did you mean there would be cost associated with the new building and it having it's own service/meter?

I will definitely check with the city before I have anything built. That is likely a year or two away. The 30 amp breaker for the welder in the garage is something I will want in the next month or two though.
