We lost out 13 yr old lab about three weeks ago. She hadn't been having any real problems, just the usual slowing down that happens to old dogs. That Sunday afternoon my 9 yr old daughter asked to take our Yorkie for a walk around the block by herself and I suggested she could walk Fergie while I walked Maggie. About 3/4 of the way around - it's a normal neighborhood sized block - Maggie started having some breathing difficulty. In hindsight, it seemed/sounded like an asthma attack but eventually escalated into full-fledged respiratory arrest. This went on for a total of about 45 minutes until her 13 year old heart eventually gave up as we were sitting in the vet's parking lot while my wife went in to get the vet. It was just Maggie and I with no other noise or distraction. I was absolutely amazed that she fought as hard as she did for as long as she did.

I'd have to say that was the worst 45 minutes I've ever experienced, and I sure wouldn't choose to go through it again, but in hindsight I'm very thankful her passing happened the way it did. We were in the middle of doing something she loved, I was there with her providing comfort as best I could the entire time, and although she was obviously in extreme physical distress, she didn't have a prolonged period of suffering in which we had to choose to have her put down. We had her creamated and she's sitting on our mantle right now.

I apologize for hijacking the thread - and I'm very sorry for your loss - but I've been wanting to share this since it happened and this was the perfect thread.

God I miss that dog.

And that's all I've got to say about that.

My best buddy Ruger got in a fight with a longhorn a month or two back. Almost got his vitals and could've killed him. Got his leg. Scared the poo outta me. Cryed the whole way to the vet. He made it, thank god. Cost me 500 bucks, but he's worth 10 times that much. Man's best friend indeed. Sorry for your losses. All of you.

To borrow the words of Billy Clinton "I feel your pain".

Sorry for your loss. It is rough.

I never was a cat person till I got married. Had to put down two cats. One we had for 17 years, another for 15. I held both of them to the end and still get misty eyed when I think about that. Two of the hardest things I've ever done in my life.

Very sorry to hear about your loss.

We recently took in another rescue dog. A little Rat Terrier and I know when he goes I will be a wreck. First little dog I have really liked since I was a kid. Only problem I have with him is trying to take the dead gophers he kills away from him. (he wants to bring them in to my wife)

The older I get the less I like people and the more I like my dogs, cats and horses

Welcome to my world. :D
