I picked up a Puma/Rossi 1892 chambered in .44 magnum. Set out trying to find an owner's manual and found one here (its the fourth one down under the puma section). In it, it says that due to the tubular magazine that I should never use FMJ ammo as it could potentially set off the rounds in the magazine. I just picked up some jacketed soft poitn .44 magnum shells, and was thinking about getting some FMJ (for practice) and JHP shells but seeing that warning makes me wonder.

Are they confusing FMJ rounds with spitzer shaped bullets? because that would make sense to me. I have no idea why a flat nose FMJ round would be dangerous in a rifle with a tubular magazine.

Out in the woods.
As long as you have a flat point you should be fine. For that matter a big holed hollow point should work but most tubular mag guns don't reccomend them. Have you tried LeverRevoulution ammo from Hornady? You'll get better balistics and better performance on game to boot.

Haven't tried the LeverRevolution from Hornady. Haven't even shot a .44 magnum ever, let alone this one. i bought what appeared to be a box of decent quality practice ammo thinking only to match caliber on gun with caliber on ammo box. didn't even consider jacket type, bullet shape, etc. I read the manual after I bought the ammo, obviously. :) thanks for your help
