[LAWTON, Okla. – The four suspects in Tuesday's brutal home invasion in Lawton are Fort Sill soldiers. Police Chief Ronnie Smith confirmed that today.

The four are in the city jail tonight. Police believe they are responsible for shooting four people and injuring 2 others in the early-morning hours, Tuesday. Today, Smith says they have been swamped with phone calls regarding possible threats to military personnel.

7News learned that Altus Air Force Base posted on its Facebook that military members of that installation are being asked not to travel to and from the Lawton area while wearing their military uniforms. It says it is because of what it calls a, "credible criminal threat" in connection to Tuesday's shootings.

Fort Sill also released a statement that says "there has been an unsubstantiated threat to soldiers in the Lawton area". It also says post officials have advised soldiers to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to law enforcement officials.

7News talked with officials from Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City. They released a statement that said "In light of a gang related incident that occurred earlier this week, Tinker military members were being asked to use caution when traveling through the Lawton area, and to not wear their uniforms for extended periods of time while shopping or dining."

Tinker officials are the only people 7News has talked to that has said Tuesday's shooting was gang-related. The statement went on to say "at the present time there is no known threat to any military installation in the Oklahoma region."

Smith says for now, Tuesday's shooting has, in fact, not been ruled as an incident that was fueled by gang activity. He says the only gang tie as of now, is that some of Lawton gang members have been heard claiming the victims of the shooting were members of their gang and because of that, they are seeking revenge.

The Facebook message posted by Altus Air Force Base raised many questions and concerns. It claims "due to a credible criminal threat military personnel have been asked not to travel to and from Lawton while in military uniform until further notice". Smith says no "credible threat" has been made.

"It is rumors, third and fourth hand," said Smith.

Rumors Smith says were created in a usual place of gossip.

"It started in a barber shop, that someone told the solider that soldiers were going to be shot. That gang members said they would retaliate for the home invasion the other night," said Smith.

Smith says though there has not been a confirmed gang threat, he does not doubt if gang members were involved in this week's shooting that they are talking about it.

"Do I believe that gang members are spouting off? Yeah, I believe they are mouthing off saying they're going to retaliate. Will they? I don't know, but we will prosecute them to the full extent of the law if they do."

At this time, Lawton Police have not told 7News if any of the suspects in custody are suspected gang members. But Smith says the gang task force unit, detectives, and special ops are all actively working this case.

7News also talked with Sheppard Air Force Base officials who said they are not operating under heightened security nor have they asked their personnel to stay away from the Lawton area. But they did say they were made aware of the heightened awareness measures other installations were taking.]

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[LAWTON, Okla. – Names of Tuesday morning suspects in home invasion have not been released, but Lawton Police Chief Ronnie Smith has confirmed the four men arrested are Fort Sill soldiers.

Today, rumors abound over alleged threats to military personnel. Fort Sill sent 7News the following press release concerning the rumors:

There has been an unsubstantiated threat to Soldiers in the Lawton area. The Lawton Police Department continues to investigate the credibility of that threat.

However, military officials learn of threats through various channels in the normal course of doing business.

Although this threat has yet to be substantiated, post officials have advised Soldiers to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to law enforcement officials.

The post maintains prudent security measures.

Fort Sill's law enforcement officials and Lawton Police Department officials will continue to assess the situation to ensure the safety of Lawton and Fort Sill residents.

Altus Air Force Base posted on its Facebook page that military members of that installation are being asked not to travel to and from the Lawton area while wearing their military uniforms, because of what they call a credible criminal threat in connection to Tuesday's shootings.

The message posted by Altus AFB -- 97 Air Mobility Wing reads as follows:

"Due to a credible criminal threat, military members are directed by the 97th AMW vice commander not to travel to and from the Lawton, Okla. area while wearing military uniforms until further notice. For more information, please contact your chain of command."

When asked on their Facebook page what happened, AAFB responded:

"Nothing ‘happened' just a ‘credible threat' as stated. So be aware of surroundings and don't highlight yourself as military by wearing a uniform."

Join us for 7News at six to hear from Smith what threat that was, and if Fort Sill has increased their security because of it.]

Gangs in the Military
Dec 05, 2008 9:41 PM CST

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - WBTV On Your Side has obtained picture and video proof our military is being infiltrated by members of street gangs. In some cases, detectives say gang members are using the tactics learned to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan to commit crimes on the streets of America. Anchor Molly Grantham is investigating.

They serve and protect under the flag of the United States of America. They protect our freedoms, and represent our great country. Some of them are gang members.

"Gangs are on the rise in every major city in the United States," says Hunter Glass, a gang consultant. "They're on the rise in the military."

Glass is an 82nd Airborne veteran and former gang detective with Fayetteville Police Department. He left policing in 2006 and now travels the country lecturing about and investigating gang life.

"Putting these people in the military doesn't change them," says Glass. "And you're certainly not going to kick them all out. If you start kicking them out... let's just say it's one percent of the military... you're going to kick out 14,000 people? I don't think so.

"America has the greatest military in the world," he continued. "I was a soldier. My dad is a veteran. I love and respect the military. But I'm also a realist. I'm telling you, it's there. To turn a blind eye isn't going to help anything."

WBTV obtained pictures which show gang graffiti in Iraq.

Images like, a Vice Lords star sprayed on a Humvee. A picture of four men dressed in fatigues showing off rifles, posted on an 18th Street Gang website. Another picture shows a guy flashing a gang sign on a "Realize Your Potential" Army recruiting chat room. Still others capture tanks and bomb walls covered with gang tagging... even a six-pointed 360-degrees intricate gang star pictured in barracks.

But the most unbelievably eye-catching images are on Glass's computer.

He shows us home video taken years ago at a popular nightclub on Fort Bragg. You can see people on the dance floor using their hands to chant "Crips"... while across the room, Blood members are throwing down signs that mean "Crip Killers".

The video proves gang life is on this North Carolina base. A Fort Bragg spokesman doesn't deny it.

"I'm positive there are gang members in the US Army," says Tom McCollum. "There are gang members probably here on Fort Bragg also, but we do everything possible to get rid of them."

McCollum says the Army's goal is to weed out as much gang activity as possible. Whenever they do find tattoos or some kind of sign, they pull the soldier off to the side and interview them in-depth. He says the soldier in question will be watched closely by his or her command to see how elevated and active they are in a gang.

"Are gang members in the military," he says. "Yes. Is it a large problem? It's not as large of a problem as some people would like to believe."

As for actual numbers, officials said they had no way of really knowing exactly how many. Glass estimates about one percent -- which would be about 14-thousand people. He also says he thinks the military should enact solid laws to deal with the element.

"In many ways I think the military is robbing Peter to pay Paul," says Glass. "It's a quick fix. We need manpower. We get these guys in here. They're good dogs in the fight. We'll worry about it later."

Later, is now. These gang members are getting trained in the military and using their knowledge to come back and fight on American streets. While in California a month ago, we interviewed two L-A County gang investigators in south central Los Angeles. Just listen to what Detective Adan Torres told us.

"One of the biggest gangbangers around here actually has on his license plate, ‘Iraq veteran, or veteran Iraq'," he said. "He's got F-13 on the back of his head. Florencia on back. F-13 on his arms... and two purple hearts. Been on two tours of duty. He's trained than half the officers here anyway, fighting him."

That's the "gotcha" -- hearing veteran gang detectives say some gang members are purple heart recipients who are a better shot than most police.

Those detectives in California listed a couple examples of problematic gang members they see all the time, who are also American soldiers.

Oklahoma shooting leads gang to threaten Missouri National Guard
Friday, September 23, 2011 | 11:00 p.m. CDT
BY Brad Racino

COLUMBIA - Missouri National Guard soldiers and airmen were cautioned today to "avoid wearing a military uniform in public" due to a "direct threat" in retaliation to a gang-related shooting around Fort Sill, Okla., earlier this week.

According to an internal memo leaked to the Columbia Missourian, "soldiers... shot CRIP gang members; in retaliation CRIP has asked its members to shoot any soldiers on sight."

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Crips is a collection of gangs throughout the U.S. with an estimated membership between 30,000 and 35,000 operating out of 221 cities in 41 states. Missouri is one of those states.

Lt. Col. Levon E. Cumpton, who issued the memo, said the message "came out through Army channels"; Fort Sill is an Army base in Lawton, Okla. He called the action a "precautionary measure."

According to Cumpton's memo, National Guard troops were instructed not to "wear a military uniform out for evening dining, shopping, and other personal matters." Full-time members were cautioned to "consider commuting to/from work in civilian clothes-specifically, if they need to make personal stops between home and work."

Spokesmen for the Missouri National Guard and Fort Sill declined to elaborate on the incident, saying the investigation is in the hands of the Lawton, Okla., Police Department.

"As far as we know, and even the Lawton Police Department know," the gang’s threat is "just an unsubstantiated rumor," said Fort Sill Public Affairs Officer Keith Pannell during a phone call late Friday night.

KSWO-TV 7 News in Lawton reported two Air Force bases in Oklahoma, Tinker and Altus, issued similar orders to enlisted soldiers. The Altus Air Force Base Facebook page commented Friday night on receiving "information on a criminal threat to military members in the Lawton-Fort Sill area."

The incident that sparked the direct threat seems to be tied to a "brutal” home invasion in Lawton earlier this week, with the four main suspects in the invasion being Fort Sill soldiers.

The Missourian was unable to reach the chief of police who is handling the case.

Almost like they were looking for something/someone.

I havent been back on post ( construction work) since this happened, Im sure they beefed up security.

Word I got is that it is drug related. Soldiers got ripped off in a drug buy...soldiers decided to retaliate...now the gangs are threatening to retaliate against them.

Yes Virginia, soldiers break the law. And now other innocent soldiers might pay the price for it.

Whatever the facts of this event turn out it was horrible, but to even think that innocent soldiers may be retaliated against is unacceptable.
