At least Petraeus seems to be in good shape.

Seriously, I'm somewhat surprised that he would take the anti-gun position.

Don't be surprised. I was an active duty USAF officer for 24 years and have been an Army civilian for 5 years working directly for general officers and there is a certain strain of thought among some (not all, its a subset) senior leaders, both officer and enlisted, that while guns may be the tools of their trade, only certain folks, i.e.they themselves, are wise enough to decide if and when such should be used. They naturally assume that in order to ensure proper use only folks such as they can be reasonably expected to know the appropriate time and manner to use force. They discount the idea of a normal citizen (or soldier) being trusted to act as a citizen-soldier in a Republic. In most cases it isn't a conscious ideological choice on their part it is more a function of their temper, attitude, and personal ego.

These are great Americans in the military but there is a reason we don't want the military making choices for civilians in civil governance.

I found this to be true in my day. Personal weapons not allow on base unless permitted. Some, not all bases allow hunting, and that was one of the exceptions to the no gun rule. Permits and training sessions were required before bringing hunting weapons on base.

...“Recently, there have been many questions raised on the meaning of the Second Amendment to our Constitution and whether we can trust law abiding Americans to own and carry firearms, “Jack Tobin, President of the Special Forces Association, said in a statement.

“’…the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed…’ a rather plain and well worded admonition,” He added."...

“I spent a career carrying typically either an M16 or an M4 Carbine. An M4 Carbine fires a .223 caliber round which is 5.56 mm at about 3000 feet per second. When it hits a human body, the effects are devastating. It’s designed for that,” McChrystal told MSNBC. “That’s what our soldiers ought to carry. I personally don’t think there’s any need for that kind of weaponry on the streets and particularly around the schools in America.”

I really doubt that assertion. His soldiers don't agree about the Devasting effects.

M193 did quite a bit more damage than M855. Either way, I consider he is now a douch bag
