my understanding is that today a law went into effect banning teenagers with permits or restricted licenses from using cell phones to txt, or GPS type devices while driving, at the risk of loosing their license.

I'm also under the understanding that instead of helping reduce accidents this will actually increase them by causing drivers to conceal their electronic device in a lower position while using it, causing them to be even more distracted from the road, and placing the head / eyes in a completely downward position instead of holding the device up and keeping some part of the road in their peripheral vision.

Please remind your teenage driver to be careful and keep the electronic devices pocketed while driving!!!!!!!

afterthought: If this new law does show an increase in accidents / deaths among teenagers, will the law makers be at fault, held accountable, fined, and imprisoned for their actions, based on the fact that survey's indicated a higher accident rate and were ignored? (no, i don't have any sources to quote, sorry)

Almost forgot... motorcycles now may proceed through a red light after a certain amount of cycles if the light has not detected their presence.

Being a rider, I'm happy as hell that law is in effect. I can't begin to count the times i was either stuck at a light or ran one because i was sick of waiting. :woohoo1:

Any driver who thinks it's more important to look down at a cell phone than to pay attention to the road... needs a slap up the side of the head.

Laws like this don't do much good. Education at the family level is key, but when the parents pull the same stupid cr@p with their cell phones, it's going to be tough.

IMHO, and I've said this before, cell phone manufacturers should be required to hard-wire their cell phone products with GPS and a shut-down feature that kicks in when the device is detected to be moving at more than, say, 10 mph. Only 9-1-1 calls can be made at that time. Even then, I'm sure 9-1-1 operators will then be swamped with calls alone the lines of this:

"Hi, this is Michelle, my stupid phone stopped because I'm on the highway. Can you please call Suzy at xxx-xxxx and tell her that, like, I decided on a color for my fingernail polish?"

Could this possibly make a bunch of teenagers start pulling over to text/talk? I doubt it, but I'm not really for a bunch of teenagers pulling over on a highway just to use their phone, that in itself could be dangerous.

The insurance/impound law is sure going to complicate matters and cause a loss of time and expense when there are "glitches" in the system. I sure hope my insurance company doesn't screw up again.

yeah but two things: one, you effectively bar the passengers from using their cell phones, people on public transportation can't use their cell phones either. two, it would probably be relatively easy to get around if you were to use a GPS jammer. Its not really feasible to legislate stupid. Proper example being set by the parents, and education are the right way to go, not hardwiring phones to shut off when you're moving

Your argument is that if you break the law and kill someone, it's somebody elses fault because they wrote the law?

Been there done that, now we need a similar law regarding cars at lights. Maybe treating them as a stop sign when no cars are present. How many times have you been stuck at a light wasting gas in the middle of the night or any other time waiting for the light to change because someone can't calibrate the lights correctly.
